Google may have stopped using dessert names in public after Android 10, but internally, the tradition is alive and well. Following Android 15's Vanilla Ice Cream and Android 16's Baklava, seems like the Android 17 codename will keep up the sweet tradition.
According to Android Authority, the Android 17 codename is Cinnamon Bun. Looks like Google's back to sticking to its long-standing alphabetical dessert-themed codenaming, moving from "B" to "C" for this release. The alphabetical naming scheme was broken last year with Baklava, giving us a "B" after "V" in Vanilla Ice Cream.

The publication states that it has obtained trusted insider evidence from within Google showing that the company is using "Cinnamon Bun" as the internal codename for API level 37.0. For those unaware, API levels uniquely identify each Android version and its set of core features.
For example, Android 15 is API level 35.0, Android 16 is 36.0 and so on. This strongly suggests that API level 37.0 will be all about Android 17, unless Google makes a highly unpredictable change. Ever since Android 10 back in 2019, these dessert names have been kept internal, with public versions simply using plain numbers.
Still, developers and Android fans keep track of them as part of the platform's culture. Besides, these versions sometimes bring along small Easter eggs or playful touches within the OS as well.
While there's no confirmed Android 17 release date yet, it's expected to land sometime in mid-2026.
