Summary

  • A new Final Cut Camera 2.0 app is now official, bringing professional camera features to iPhones.
  • It brings new video customisation options, Centre Stage to front camera, ProRes RAW support, genlock and more.
  • The new app will be available for free on the App Store starting later this month for iOS 18.6 and above.

Alongside the new iPhones 17 series, the Watch Series 11, Watch SE 3 and the Watch Ultra 3, Apple has also announced a new pro-grade video creation app for creators – the Final Cut Camera 2.0. This brings an upgrade over the existing Final Cut Camera app.

Apple says that the new app will be free to download for iPhone users. It brings for the first time ever, the support for ProRes RAW footages capture on the iPhone 17 series. This will help creators, reframe shots, stabilize footage, and set final aspect ratios, all without compromising image quality or performance.

Additionally, users will now be able to further customise their recorded footages with features like white balance and manual focus. Apple claims that "Final Cut Camera 2.0 unlocks unprecedented recording capabilities on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, the first smartphones capable of capturing ProRes RAW".

The new update also brings Open gate recording support. Users can now capture full sensor area for wider fields of view at resolutions beyond DCI 4K. Editors can later crop, stabilize, or adjust aspect ratios without any loss of detail.

Additionally, since the iPhone 17 series smartphones and the iPhone Air finally support Centre Stage in the front camera, the Final Cut Camera 2.0 app will let the latest smartphones gain intuitive new manual adjustments.

Apart from this, the next new addition to iPhones is genlock. With genlock, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max can align frame timing with external cameras or systems, eliminating the need for manual frame-by-frame adjustments in multi-camera shoots. It will help the smartphone stay fixed at a single position while shooting both vertically and horizontally.

Other that that, the Final Cut Camera 2.0 update brings support for Apple Log 2 recording on iPhone 17 Pro, timecodes for precise workflow and ProRes RAW support for 200mm telephoto shots.

That said, Final Cut Camera 2.0 will release in the end part of September 2025 and will be available for free via the App Store. Every iPhone with iOS 18.6 and above will be able to download the new professional videography app from Apple.
