State-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has introduced a new privacy-focused feature called Kavach Number. The new feature is aimed at helping women recharge their mobile connection without revealing their personal phone numbers at retail outlets.
BSNL Kavach Number Feature: How Does It Work?
The new feature allows women subscribers to generate a temporary 10-digit alternate number that is linked to their original BSNL mobile connection. Once activated, the BSNL Kavach Number is sent to the subscriber via SMS. This number can be shared at recharge stores instead of the user's real phone number, while the recharge is still processed on the main account.

By doing so, the service adds an extra layer of security and privacy, preventing the user's personal phone number from being exposed to shopkeepers or others present at the store.
BSNL says the initiative is meant to address privacy concerns that arise when users recharge their phones at physical retail outlets, where mobile numbers are often written down or entered manually.
In some cases, this can lead to misuse of contact details, including unwanted calls or messages. The BSNL Kavach Number system is to exactly minimise such risks by allowing women to keep their real number confidential during such transactions.
The BSNL Kavach Number feature could be particularly useful for users who still rely on offline recharge shops, especially in areas where internet connectivity or digital payment adoption remains limited. By introducing the Kavach Number system, BSNL has taken a brilliant step forward towards strengthening privacy and offering a safer experience for women subscribers.
