Over the last half a decade, app adaptibility and optimisations have been the core focus of Android updates and for all the right reasons. With foldables still being one of the most recent form factors in town, Google's taking another step to ensure users find high-quality software optimised for their folding screens and tablets on Android.

Google Play Store to Add Badge for Large-Screen Optimised Apps

Spotted first by Android Authority in the latest Play Services changelog, the upcoming Google Play Store version 51.2 will introduce a dedicated badge to highlight apps that are optimised for large-screen devices. This move from Google aims to help users spot apps that scale correctly, saving them from the disappointment that may follow.

For those unaware, the Google Play Store already uses something similar to identify official government apps and legitimate VPN services. Besides just the large-screen badges, the Play Store version 51.2 will also bring a handful of smaller QoL improvements, like:

  • Content Rating: Additional view for an app's content rating.
  • Install Flows: Install calls will direct to a pop up and not deep into the Play Store.
  • Tablet Collections: Tablet users can access Collections by holding the Play Store app icon.
  • Subscription Info: Users can review the subscription plans they own directly from the app's page.

The last feature is the most awaited one, as finding out the subscription tier currently involves digging into the Play Store menus for Payments

Similarly, the new Install Flows have already started showing up for a few users, where tapping on an install link opens up a pop-up preview of the app. It's highly possible that Google was testing this installation flow and it will finally roll out soon.

These features are not yet live for the masses just yet. Users will need to wait for the Play Store version 51.2 to officially roll out to more devices before they can see the new badges and tweaks. The rollout should happen over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out! Expect the tech giant to reveal more about these features at the upcoming Google I/O 2026 event.
