India is one of the biggest markets for OpenAI. Hence, the brand has doubled down on its commitment to make Artificial Intelligence (AI) accessible to the people of the country. Now, it is planning to set up its first official office in the country.
In a statement made to Reuters, OpenAI announced that it is on track to open its first office in India. The facility will be located at the heart of the Nation, New Delhi. While, the exact location of the OpenAI office has not been disclosed yet, we do know that the firm will go operational in 2025 itself. To facilitate the same, the organisation has already started assembling a local team "to build AI for India, and with India".
Sam Altman, co-founder and Chief Executive at OpenAI mentioned that this move is in-line with OpenAI's commitment to make ChatGPT more accessible to the people of the country.
The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the India AI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.
— Sam Altman, co-founder and Chief Executive, OpenAI
This latest development comes days after OpenAI launched its most affordable ChatGPT Go plan at Rs 399 per month specifically for India. Users in the country can now also purchase subscriptions via UPI in the country.
Along with this, OpenAI has announced its first Education Summit in India in the later part of August 2025 and its first Developer Day in India in the end part of 2025.

The Government of India is actively working with OpenAI to bring more innovative AI solutions to the country. India is leading when it comes to AI adoption and currently houses the largest population of student users on ChatGPT and weekly active users.
Hence, it is no surprise that OpenAI is treating India's AI landscape this seriously.
