Summary
- Huawei and Oppo are testing 1:1 square sensors for front cameras in their upcoming smartphones.
- This mirrors the iPhone 17's Centre Stage tech, which uses a square sensor for orientation-free capture.
- This could allow perfect cropping for both vertical and horizontal videos from a single shot.
It looks like Android manufacturers are prepping to adapt one of the signature iPhone 17 camera features. This could allow them to take better front-facing photos, finally bridging the gap in the selfie department between iPhone and Android cameras.
Oppo and Huawei could introduce 1:1 front cameras soon
According to credible leaks from Digital Chat Station, Oppo and Huawei are currently testing 1:1 aspect ratio front sensors, signalling a direct move to rival Apple's Centre Stage technology. The translations of Green and Kikuchi in the leak translate to Oppo and Huawei.

For those unaware, this hardware innovation was popularised by the iPhone 17, which introduced an 18 MP square sensor to allow for orientation-free shooting. By using a 1:1 sensor, the iPhone can instantly crop a perfect 16:9 or 9:16 image without the user needing to rotate the device or lose out on quality.
We previously noted how this iPhone feature makes Android selfies look dated, and it appears that Huawei and Oppo will be the first to bridge the gap, finally. Once manufacturers implement this, it would solve a major headache for content creators.

It's also likely that the brands will explore more innovative uses for the square sensor, like the ability of the camera to pan automatically and follow your face, as Centre Stage does, or give users the ability to capture the raw 1:1 output that they can edit later, something Apple doesn't allow yet.
With this initial push from giants like Oppo and Huawei, we should see more manufacturers use the same tech very soon. Although it took Android makers more than 6 months to realise the tech's worth, it's better late than never. Android phones can finally move past the same old rectangular sensors and wow users with wide, flexible, high-quality selfies.
While there's no information about which Oppo or Huawei phones could use the new square sensors first, we should hear more about the same in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
