WhatsApp is rolling out a new AI-powered feature called Writing Help, which aims to make it easier for users to fine-tune their messages before hitting send. The tool suggests different tones and rewrites while keeping a privacy-first approach.
The Meta-owned app took to an official blog post to announce the feature. Users can access the Writing Help tool by simply tapping a new pencil icon that appears when composing a message in any individual or group chat.
This AI tool suggests several tone options like "professional, funny, or supportive" to users. Users can then choose to select from these suggestions or further edit the suggested rewrites before sending the message.

Additionally, WhatsApp emphasises that Writing Help is powered by its Private Processing technology. What this means is that Meta AI generates suggestions without Meta or WhatsApp ever accessing, reading or storing the sent texts or AI revisions.
Besides, independent security audits by NCC Group and Trail of Bits have also been conducted to validate and strengthen the privacy-preserving approach of the tool.
As part of WhatsApp's commitment to user control, the new AI Writing Help feature is optional and disabled by default. Users can choose to enable it easily from the Settings page.
Writing Help was previously spotted on WhatsApp beta and it's good to see it finally make it out into a stable release. It's currently rolling out in English and first rolling out to users in the United States and "several other countries." However, a broader rollout is expected later in 2025.
