Summary

  • OnePlus is a Chinese smartphone brand owned by Oppo, which is in turn owned by BBK Electronics.
  • Its smartphones are made primarily in China and assembled in India via local facilities in Greater Noida.
  • You can check the country of origin of your OnePlus phone by looking at the back of its original retail packaging.

When you buy a OnePlus smartphone in India, the first thing you may notice is a "Made in India" label, but that wasn't always the case and is still not completely true. While the sticker is accurate regarding the phone's final assembly, the real origins of the brand and its components tell a much different story.

OnePlus Company Belongs to Which Country?

OnePlus is fundamentally a Chinese brand with its headquarters in Shenzhen, Guangdong. The company was founded in December 2013 by Pete Lau and Carl Pei, and while Pete Lau still heads OnePlus, Carl Pei parted ways in 2020 and founded his own brand, now infamously known as Nothing.

From the beginning, OnePlus has been deeply tied to Oppo, which used to be tied to BBK Electronics, which dissolved in 2023. For those unaware, Vivo's country of origin is China, too, and it also came under BBK Electronics. For those unaware, it was a massive Chinese conglomerate. OnePlus now operates under Oppo.

Despite the decentralisation, OnePlus continues to function as a core subsidiary of Oppo alongside Realme. Both share critical research, development and supply chain resources. Today, the core design, software engineering for OxygenOS and hardware conceptualisation all take place in China.

Which Country Are OnePlus Phones Made In?

Despite its Chinese origins, OnePlus doesn't build all of its phones in its home country. To keep up with massive international demand and navigate regional import taxes, the brand splits its manufacturing based on where the phones will be sold.

For example, buying a OnePlus phone in North America, Europe, or China means you will get a phone assembled in China, in Shenzhen or Dongguan. As for India, one of OnePlus' critical markets, the brand uses local facilities in Greater Noida.

OnePlus has partnered with local manufacturers because of which, 100% of all the OnePlus smartphones and tablets sold in India are assembled domestically. Here's a comprehensive breakdown of all the countries where OnePlus smartphones are made:

  • China: OnePlus phones are extensively made in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China, which is also where Oppo phones are made. Since OnePlus is Oppo's sister firm, some Oppo phones are rebadged and sold globally as OnePlus phones.
  • India: While OnePlus doesn't have a standalone factory in India, it relies on Oppo's production facility in Greater Noida and third-party electronics manufacturers for its IoT products, including Bhagwati Products Limited, which is also based in Greater Noida. The Oppo manufacturing plant was set up back in 2016, and it reportedly has over 10,000 workers, producing over 60 lakh smartphones per month.
  • Other countries: For European and broader Asian markets, most of the phones are exported from India. However, there are a few markets like Vietnam and Malaysia where OnePlus has partnered with regional partners, where final assembly stages are managed through contracted supply chain hubs. India and China remain the key manufacturing hubs for the company.

Even when a phone is assembled in Noida, the parts on the workbench come from multiple manufacturers and locations around the world. Most of the parts, though, are shipped from China. Here's an overview of the country of origin of all components.

ModemTaiwan, USThe 5G modems on OnePlus smartphones are integrated by either MediaTek (Taiwan) or Qualcomm (US).

How to Check Which Country Your OnePlus Phone Is Made In?

Checking where your OnePlus phone was manufactured is a piece of cake. Just like checking IMEI on a OnePlus phone, the easiest way to do it is by looking at its packaging. All you need to do is look at the sticker on the back or the bottom edge of the packaging. You should see a "Manufactured in" or "Country of Origin" text on the label, confirming exactly where the phone was put together.

It's worth noting that in most cases, the label refers to where your phone was assembled and not where it was made. Most of the parts used in the OnePlus smartphone arrive directly from China, so most units are technically still "Made in China".
