Google's next major Android release has quietly revealed its identity, as a new report now spots solid Android 17 codename hints in internal builds. Looks like Google's long-running tradition of using dessert names internally continues even though they are no longer used in public branding.
Android 17 Codename continues Google's dessert naming sequence
The Android 17 codename was spotted by folks over at Android Authority in the November 2025 Android Canary build, where a new entry CINNAMON_BUN appears under android.os.Build. This mirrors the pattern seen with last year's Android 16 "Baklava", which also saw Google's alphabetical dessert sequence being used during development.

At this stage, Android 17 still sits on a placeholder API level 10000, a temporary value Google uses early in the cycle. It will eventually transition to its final API level, expected to be API 37, once the platform hits stability in 2026.
The Android 17 Codename Cinnamon Bun reference is reportedly visible across related strings and system identifiers in the preview builds as well. While the name will not surface in any consumer-facing interface, it provides an early insight into the development timeline and confirms that internal work on Android 17 is progressing as per schedule.
Reports suggest Android 17 may follow a similar rollout pattern to recent releases, with early previews landing months ahead of Google I/O and a stable release anticipated around mid-2026. For now, the Android 17 codename is the first confirmed detail and a small nod to Android's nostalgic dessert-era personality.
