Google has released a new Android Canary build for developers and advanced users. This marks Google's sixth Canary build since these were announced last year as something that brings bleeding-edge features early to Android. The latest April 2026 Canary brings new features and improves the existing ones.
What's New in Android Canary April 2026
The latest Android Canary build carries version number 2604 with build number ZP11.260320.007, and arrives a few days earlier in the month than the previous release. The update is now rolling out to existing Canary users using the Pixel 8 or above smartphones. The update for older Tensor processors will arrive at a later date.

As for the features, because Canary is the experimental Google Android track, this new update focuses on minor UI tweaks and under-the-hood changes rather than massive feature drops. Android's community manager, Mishaal Rahman, revealed all the features the 2604 build brings to the table. This includes:
- Notification Shade Changes: When a user clears all of their notifications, the shade now displays a "You're all caught up" message with a small trophy icon, replacing the old, unenthusiastic No notifications text.
- Compact App Menus: The long-press context menus on Android are handy, but they could be too long at times. The update condenses the menu, and App Shortcuts now appear collapsed behind a new Shortcuts toggle to save more space.
- Collapsed Actions: Once the shortcuts menu is expanded, the actions menu remains collapsed by default and must be revealed via a dedicated "Actions" toggle.

While these features are nothing extraordinary to write home about, these little things play a huge part in enhancing the user experience. And as always, Google explicitly advises against installing Canary builds on primary smartphones as they tend to be unstable. Early builds can also cause crashes and unexpected bugs.
That said, switching to Canary erases user data, and switching back to stable does it too. Besides, users will need to flash Canary manually, which is risky. Therefore, installing Canary is only recommended for advanced users and developers.
With the official Google I/O 2026 announcement underway, where Google will announce new Android 17 features, we should see these changes appear in the stable version that will arrive sometime in July 2026, so stay tuned.
