Last week at the Google I/O 2026, Wear OS 7 was announced as the tech giant's newest smartwatch platform. It introduced a lot of new features, including Wear Widgets, which are based on Android's Material 3 Expressive design language. Now, we get to know the first apps to officially bring support for Wear Widgets with Wear OS 7.
Wear Widgets in Wear OS 7 Will Initially Support Four Apps
In a dedicated Google I/O 2026 developer preview video on YouTube, Andre Labonte, Product Manager at Google, confirmed that Spotify, WhatsApp, Peloton and Todoist will become the first apps to bring Wear Widgets support in Wear OS 7.

Moreover, since Wear Widgets are powered by Android's remote UI framework, Labonte confirmed that developers will be able to shape Wear Widgets as an extension of a phone app by delivering richer animations, smoother interactions and better adaptability across form factors. Wear Widgets can be cross-shared across Android and Wear OS, including Android Auto.
Wear Widgets will replace the age-old full-screen swipeable Tiles in a 2x1 and 2x2 size formats, similar to widget sizes on smartphones. Google is calling them "flexible and dynamic" and are expected to maintain system-wide consistency across devices.
Also, Wear Widgets will not remain limited to newer Wear OS versions. It is also backward compatible meaning that every Wear OS version, from 4 and above will be able to experience Wear Widgets if developers use the Wear Widgets APIs to make their apps compatible with older models.
That said, Wear OS 7 will launch later this year and Wear Widgets will debut then. Hence, we will need to wait and see how well they are implemented and how widely they are adopted.
