Android's fragmentation problem is not only limited to different manufacturers but also within the software. A great example of this is how calls from third-party apps like WhatsApp don't appear in the default phone app. Well, that might change as Android is updating Android's framework for other calls to appear within the default dialer.
VoIP Calls will Now Appear in Android Dialer
Google has announced that it's working on a new set of APIs which would allow VoIP applications like WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram to push their call logs straight to the phone's native dialer, such as the Phone by Google app.

These third-party calls will sit right alongside your standard cellular call history. Tapping on a missed internet call from the log will launch the respective service and place a phone call without forcing you to manually navigate through the third-party app's interface to make a callback.
This integration already appears to be live in the latest Android Canary 2605 update, which recently rolled out to supported Pixel smartphones. We briefly remember Calling Accounts being a part of Dialer settings, so we fired the app up, and voila! We could see both WhatsApp and Google Meet – both options were turned on by default on Android 17 Beta 4.
We could not get the missed call logs to appear in the dialer, though. This is likely because WhatsApp has yet to fully integrate the APIs. That said, it should be interesting to see how long platforms take to use these APIs on their platforms.
For those unaware, Google tested another related feature in Android 16 QPR2, potentially allowing users to hide specific calls from the system call log. The function was only heard about since the APIs were still in initial testing stages back then.
However, this new announcement from Google confirms that VoIP call logging is almost here on Android. While there's no specific release timeline yet for stable users, availability could take more time depending on how quickly developers act to integrate this feature. Given the sheer utility of the feature, that should happen pretty soon. Until then, stay tuned.
