Samsung is working on a new feature in its next major software update aimed at enhancing user privacy. One UI 8.5 could include a tool that can automatically detect and hide sensitive information when sharing images.
One UI 8.5 Privacy Protection will detect private info in images with Gemini Nano
Spotted first by SamMobile, the Privacy Protection feature is accessible from the Android share menu inside One UI 8.5. When sharing a photo containing private data, the share sheet will show a pop-up "May contain sensitive information" message.

Users can tap on the Privacy Protection option in the share sheet to automatically blur sensitive parts. They can then tap on Share again to share the edited image. No more manual editing required.
This isn't a brand-new feature, but a global expansion of a similar tool that was previously only China-exclusive. The feature is presumed to leverage on-device AI, which could likely be Gemini Nano.

Privacy Protection is a part of Samsung's wider privacy push. It will complement other rumoured and upcoming features, such as Private Display. The feature is expected to show up in the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra and could prevent others from peeking at the user's screen.
With the stable version of One UI 8 currently rolling out to supported devices, One UI 8.5 is expected to come out in the latter half of 2026. Since features of One UI 8 made it an incremental update over One UI 7, we may see more features to roll out with One UI 8.5.
Also, with Samsung and Google working closely, we wouldn't be surprised if the same feature were to make it to Google Pixel smartphones. Stay tuned as we will cover all the new features in this space.
