Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly working to introduce a new SIM binding system for its Indian users. Spotted by WABetaInfo in the latest Android beta version of 2.26.8.6, the upcoming feature will use a new SIM verification mechanism to comply with regulatory requirements in India.

How WhatsApp SIM Binding feature could work

As per the report, the new WhatsApp beta build does not yet enable any visible SIM binding feature for testers. However, it contains early traces of a system designed to keep a user's account actively linked to the SIM card used during registration. This is likely to combat the misuse of recycled or disconnected phone numbers.

Currently, WhatsApp verifies accounts through a one-time six-digit code sent via SMS during login. Once verified, the app does not continuously check whether the registered SIM remains active in the device. If you're unsure which mobile number is active on your phone, here's a quick guide on how to check your SIM number on Android.

The upcoming SIM binding feature for WhatsApp would introduce periodic background verification to confirm that the account remains associated with the original SIM card.

If implemented, users may occasionally be prompted to re-enter their number using a new verification code. In cases where the SIM is no longer active or present, access to the account could be temporarily restricted until verification is completed. Importantly, chat history and stored messages are expected to remain unaffected.

The WhatsApp SIM binding feature is reportedly being developed for Indian phone numbers with the +91 country code. Users outside the country are unlikely to see similar checks, at least for now.

Since the upcoming system focuses on ensuring SIM ownership and activity, users concerned about misuse can also learn how to find out if someone is using a SIM card in their name to stay informed and secure.

Since the functionality is still under development, it has not yet rolled out to beta testers. More details about how SIM binding for WhatsApp will work in practice are expected in future updates.
