The Android Beta team has confirmed that the first Android 17 beta is just around the corner. With the final patch for the second Android 16 QPR3 rolling out, i.e., Beta 2.1, Google is now shifting its focus to the next major platform release, officially tagged as 26Q2.
Android 17 Beta 1 is coming sooner than you think
Revealed by the Android Beta team on Reddit, supported Google Pixel smartphones enrolled in the Android Beta Program will soon get Android 17 Beta 1. The post suggests the transition to the new version will be seamless.

If users take no action, their phones will automatically receive the Android 17 Beta 1 update once it goes live. However, users need to be mindful that once updated, they cannot leave the Beta program without wiping their data until the cycle ends in June 2026.
What's surprising is that there's no mention of Developer Previews this time around. For those unaware, Google traditionally pushed at least two developer previews before the Beta of a new Android release, but that may not happen this time.
Perhaps this could be attributed to the Canary builds, in which Google has reportedly been testing many features. Since both the Canary and Android 17 are based on the latest Android 16 QPR3 builds, it is possible that the initial Android 17 testing was done on Canary to accelerate the process.

Users who want to hop off the beta train and stick with the stable Android 16 QPR3 release need to do it now. The process involves opting out of Android beta while ignoring the downgrade OTA that appears once they do it. Installing the downgrade update will wipe your data.
Instead, the post recommends waiting for the official public stable Android 16 QPR3 release (CP1A) that's expected to arrive soon. Recent Android 17 leaks point to a newly-designed split Notifications and Quick settings, more system-wide blur effects, app lock and a new screen recording pop-up menu. Besides, we also expect the release to contain traces of these Android 17 features.
While the post doesn't give us a specific timeline for the update's release date, the announcement suggests it could happen over the next few weeks, so stay tuned!
