Summary

  • Android is testing a way to let users easily move their saved passkeys between different third-party password apps.
  • Hidden settings uncovered in Google Password Manager point to two new options: "Import passwords & passkeys" and "Export passwords & passkeys".
  • The transfer feature uses the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP), meaning it will only work with supporting brands like Bitwarden

Passkeys not only make it easier for users to sign into their accounts, but they're also more secure than traditional passwords. However, one of the challenges is that moving them between different apps is difficult. While Apple fixed the same with its iOS 26 update, recent findings suggest Android may soon get the option too.

Passkey Transfers are Coming to Android

Folks over at Android Authority recently dug into the Android system code and successfully activated an unreleased transfer tool inside the Google Password Manager. The transferability inside the app is currently barebones as it only shows basic import and export options.

However, the newly unearthed options added by Google explicitly read "Import passwords & passkeys" and "Export passwords & passkeys", suggesting Google is working to make transfers much easier.

As for how it could work, the leaked interface shows that when importing, users can tap either of the buttons and select a supported third-party app. If we take Bitwarden, for example, Android will then pull the keys from the app and store them in the Google Password Manager.

While there's no direct Export button, users will be prompted to transfer their passkeys automatically whenever they open a different password manager app.  As for how the entire thing works, it uses something called the Credential Exchange Protocol.

This means the transfers will work only with the apps that support CXP. Fortunately, major Android manufacturers and tech firms already back the technology, so the transfer should be supported widely. That said, while the menus are fully functional right now, Google has yet to announce the feature's rollout timeline for the public.

One of The Android Show 2026 announcements was wireless and more seamless transfers from iOS to Android. It remains to be seen if the transfer will include Passkey transfers. Since the feature is fully functional internally, users will not have to wait for too long. Stay tuned to Beebom Gadgets to hear about it first, and maybe learn how to do it, too.
