Ahead of Google I/O 2026 next week, Google kicked off the festivities with the Android Show I/O Edition 2026 showcase today. This event primarily focused on Android and how Google is bringing its mobile operating system and "intelligence" systems closer than ever before. From a new category of AI-first laptops powered by Android to AI that can order your dinner, here are the five biggest announcements from The Android Show 2026.
1. Gemini Intelligence on Android

Gemini is evolving Android into a proactive intelligence system with the help of what Google is calling Gemini Intelligence. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? (cough... Apple Intelligence)
Gemini Intelligence brings a host of features designed to anticipate your needs and automate complex tasks. Here's a quick rundown:
- App Automation: Gemini can now handle multi-step logistics, such as finding the syllabus in Gmail or adding the required books to a shopping cart.
- Visual Context: Users can snap a photo of a travel brochure and ask Gemini to find a similar tour on Expedia for a group.
- Gemini in Chrome: Starting in late June, the Chrome browser on Android will feature a personal AI assistant built on Gemini 3.1. It has an auto browse feature, which can book appointments for you autonomously or reserve parking spots using services like SpotHero.
- Creative Tools: The new Rambler feature transforms spoken disruptions like "ums" and "ahs" into polished, multilingual texts. Meanwhile, Nano Banana allows for instant image customisation, such as turning a webpage into an infographic.
2. Googlebook

Alex Kuscher, Senior Director of Laptops and Tablets at Google, introduced the Googlebook today. It's a premium laptop category designed for Gemini Intelligence and is built with partners like Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
Googlebook features a signature "glowbar" and the DeepMind-powered Magic Pointer. This cursor provides contextual actions like wiggling over a date to schedule a meeting or selecting two images to instantly visualise them together.
These premium laptops also offer deep Android integration, allowing users to run phone apps directly on their laptops without downloads or emulation. This lets you order food or complete a language lesson via your phone while staying on your screen. Additionally, "Quick Access" integrates your phone's files directly into the file browser for seamless searching and insertion without manual transfers.
3. Wireless iOS-to-Android Transfer
Google and Apple have overhauled the iOS-to-Android transfer process to greatly simplify the switch between platforms. Instead of a wired connection, you can now move data between OSes wirelessly.
This wireless experience allows users to migrate all their essential data, including passwords, photos, messages, favourite apps and contacts. The process also supports the transfer of home screen layouts and eSIMs for a truly seamless setup experience.
This streamlined migration system is to provide users with a smoother transition for users moving from iPhone to Android ecosystem, thereby eradicating the need for third-party apps. The wireless transfer process is scheduled to launch first on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones later this year.
4. Pause Point

To combat doomscrolling, Google has introduced Pause Point. Unlike standard app timers that can be easily snoozed, Pause Point adds intentional disruptions to distracting apps like Instagram, Facebook, etc. When opening a flagged app, users are met with a 10-second breather to reflect on why they are using the phone.
During this time, the system suggests alternative activities like breathing exercises, viewing favourite photos or listening to an audiobook. To ensure discipline, the feature requires a full phone restart to disable. This is similar to how Zen Mode works on OnePlus phones.
5. Advanced Privacy and Security Features

The Android Show 2026 showcased a deep commitment to hardware-backed protection as well, with Android 17. Here's a rundown:
- Live Threat Detection: Using on-device AI, the system now monitors for suspicious patterns like SMS forwarding or accessibility overlays used to trick users into unintended actions.
- Find Hub Upgrades: The "Mark as lost" feature now supports biometric lock. This means that even if a thief knows your PIN, they cannot turn off device tracking or access your phone somehow, adding another layer of protection.
- Temporary Precise Location: A new location button now allows users to share their precise location temporarily for a single task only while that specific app is open.
- Verified Financial Calls: To combat spoofing, Android will now communicate directly with banking apps to verify if an incoming call is legitimate. If the bank app doesn't confirm the call, the system ends it automatically.
Apart from this, Google is also enhancing how we connect and create using Android phones, starting with a significant update to Quick Share that makes it compatible with AirDrop for supported Android phones, beginning with Pixel.
Now, for those non-compatible devices, they can now generate a QR code to instantly share files with iOS devices over the cloud. Who knows, we may even get to see the previously spotted AirDrop-like Tap to Share feature make it to all phones later. Then, a new Noto 3D emoji has been introduced, which is set to arrive on Pixel phones later this year.
For creators, Android 17 introduces Screen Reactions, allowing users to record themselves and their screen simultaneously to create authentic reaction videos in just a few taps. Google has also teamed up with Meta to bring pro-grade upgrades to Instagram, like Ultra HDR capture, built-in video stabilisation and Night Sight integration.
These are supported by new AI-powered tools in the Edits app, such as "Smart Enhance" for upscaling content and "Sound Separation" to isolate or remove specific audio tracks, such as wind or background noise.
From the agentic power of Gemini Intelligence to the specialised focus of Pause Point, the Android Show I/O Edition 2026 wants your phone to become a proactive companion. With that out of the way, all eyes are now on the Google I/O 2026 developer event, which is merely a week away now. So, stay tuned as we will bring you all the announcements from the main event as well.
