Google appears to be quietly testing a new generation of AI assistants, as an experimental app called COSMO briefly surfaced on the Play Store before being swiftly pulled. The listing suggests the company is exploring a more advanced, proactive alternative to its current Gemini AI assistant.
Google COSMO AI Assistant: How Does It Work?
9to5Mac spotted the app listing on the Play Store, which is described as an experimental AI assistant built for Android devices, reportedly developed under Google Research. While details remain limited, the app's Play Store description hinted at a system designed to handle both everyday tasks and more complex queries.

Who knows, Google is probably building the COSMO AI assistant to be a smarter, context-aware assistant than what users are accustomed to with Gemini. One of the key highlights is this app's hybrid AI approach. COSMI is said to combine on-device processing, likely powered by Gemini Nano, with cloud-based intelligence. As a result, the listed COSMO AI assistant application was 1.13 GB in size.

The interface itself also appears to be quite experimental and basic, letting users carry out simple tasks like setting a timer. Additionally, we also see the AI assistant be capable of using "Browser Agents" to automate web-based tasks.
The report suggests COSMO is less about reactive commands and more about anticipating user needs. It includes a range of built-in "skills", such as automatically suggesting to-do lists, drafting documents, setting calendar events and even triggering timers based on conversations.
Other reported features include tools like "Recall", "List Tracker", "Document Writer", "Deep Research" and "Quick Photo Lookup." It also features multiple operating modes such as Hybrid, on-device only or server-assisted.

Additionally, COSMO appears to tap into Android system-level access, potentially enabling it to interact with apps and on-screen content more directly. Looks like Google is preparing for a bigger leap, especially since even Apple is getting a Gemini-powered Siri app soon with iOS 27.
Despite its intriguing capabilities, COSMO's appearance was short-lived. The app was quickly removed from the Play Store, suggesting the release was accidental. We expect Google to reveal more details about the COSMO AI assistant at the upcoming Google I/O 2026 event.
