Summary

  • The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has announced Qi 2's latest version 2.2.1 update.
  • The new Qi 2 standard can deliver up to 25W wireless output with backward compatibility.
  • Both iPhone and Android devices can leverage the new standard via accessory makers like Belkin and Anker.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) made the widespread adoption of the Qi 2 wireless power standard possible. This tech makes use of magnets to deliver up to 15W wireless power via Qi 2-certified accessories, much like Apple's MagSafe tech. Now, the latest version of the Qi 2 standard is here, with upgraded power delivery wattage and some key improvements.

WPC announced on July 23, 2025, the arrival of the version 2.2.1 update to the Qi 2 standard. Previously rumoured to arrive with the Qi 2.2 branding, this new iteration is known as Qi 2 25W.

As the name suggests, the key upgrade with this new version is the ability to deliver 25W fast wireless charging output. This will also incorporate magnets to do the same, much as the existing Qi 2 standard. However, it is limited to 15W of wireless power deliver only.

Speaking of magnets, with Qi 2 25W standard, the alignment between the phone and the charger has been improved. This ensures fewer chances of misalignment and eliminates overheating and performance loss.

However, one of the key feature according to us of this new standard is support for backward compatibility. This means that Qi 2 25W certified devices can also work with Qi 1 and Qi 2 chargers and vice versa.

The momentum building behind the next stage in the evolution of the Qi standard is incredible. Consumers will be delighted when they experience Qi2 25W as it delivers nearly 70% more power than the original Qi2. The number of devices in the Qi2 25W certification queue for launch is unprecedented, as is the quality and breadth of our members product designs.

Fady Mishriki, Chair of WPC’s Board of Directors

As indicated by Mishriki, a number of wireless charging accessories manufacturers are indeed hard at work bringing the next gen Qi 2-certified magnetic wireless charging solutions to the market. Not too long ago, we saw the popular wireless accessories brand in India, Belkin prepping its Qi 2 25W charging dock. And similar to Belkin, brands like Ugreen, Energizer, Aukey, Anker, Besus and more prominent charging product manufacturers are also not too far behind.

While Anker even has a detailed blog on that breaks down the Qi 2 25W wireless charging tech, Ugreen has a full-fledged power bank listed on their website with the new Qi 2 standard, even before it was annouced.

This development is important since now that the Qi 2 25W standard is official, the next generation of Android and iPhones can use of this wireless charging tech. This opens up new horizons for wireless smartphone accessories for Android smartphones, which were previously limited to only iPhones and worked on Android devices via several workarounds.

WPC has themselves confirmed that several hundred Android devices are in-line to receive the new Qi 2 25W standard. While, the exact name of these devices are yet to be known, we can expect brands like Samsung, Google, Xiaomi and so on to adopt these standard on priority and bring their next smartphones with the same in the market.
