Summary

  • Most Android phone brands are headquartered in China or South Korea, but their phones are assembled across India, Vietnam, China, Indonesia and Brazil.
  • Nearly all Android phones sold in India are assembled locally.
  • If you want to check where your Android phone was made, check the "Made in" or "Country of Origin" label on the original phone box.

If you are wondering which country your Android phone comes from, well, the there is a three-part answer. The first is where the company is headquartered, secondly, where your phone was assembled and thirdly, where the components come from. In this article, we have brought all the major Android brands under one umbrella including Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, OnePlus, Motorola and Pixel. You can now easily find the origin country and manufacturing hubs of each brand. On that note, let's begin.

Android Phone Brands and Their Countries

If you want the short answer, here is a table covering the country of origin and the major manufacturing locations of every popular Android brand.

VivoChinaChina, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh
Xiaomi, Redmi and PocoChinaChina, India, Indonesia, Vietnam

Difference Between Brand Country and Manufacturing Country

Before we go by phone brands, you should understand the difference between brand country and manufacturing country.

First off, the country of origin means where the company is headquartered and where the phone is designed. Vivo, Oppo and Xiaomi are Chinese companies, Samsung is South Korean and Google is American.

Second, the "Made in" label on your phone box only tells you where your Android phone was physically assembled. A Samsung phone is a South Korean product, but your unit was most likely put together in India or Vietnam. The label tells you about the assembly location, not the brand's country of origin.

And third, the components inside your phone come from all over the world. The chipset is usually fabricated in Taiwan or South Korea, the display panel comes from South Korea or China and the camera sensor is likely Japanese. So to sum up, no smartphone is truly made in a single country. Keep this thing in mind as we go through each brand below.

Android Phone Brands by Country of Origin

Now, here is the detailed breakdown of all major Android brands, which country they belong to and where their phones are manufactured. I have also linked our dedicated explainer for each brand if you want to learn about the complete origin story.

Samsung

Samsung is a South Korean multinational company and its phones are made by Samsung Electronics, which is headquartered in Suwon. However, very few Galaxy phones are actually made in South Korea. Vietnam is Samsung's biggest production hub and handles around half of its global smartphone output.

India comes second, covering everything from budget Galaxy M-series phones to flagship Samsung Galaxy devices. Samsung also runs smaller plants in Brazil, Indonesia and Egypt to serve local markets. For the complete breakdown, check out our explainer on which country Samsung belongs to.

Google Pixel

Google is an American company owned by Alphabet and Pixel phones are designed in the US. The manufacturing, however, happens in Vietnam, India and China. Of late, Google has been aggressively moving production out of China.

Currently, Vietnam handles most flagship Pixel models. In India, Pixel phones are assembled in partnership with Foxconn and Dixon. So, if you are curious about Pixel's origin story, check out our explainer on which country Google Pixel phones are made in.

OnePlus

OnePlus is a Chinese brand and it has been tied to Oppo since the beginning. OnePlus spent its early years inside the same BBK Electronics family similar to Oppo and Vivo and today it operates as an Oppo subsidiary.

OnePlus phones sold in North America, Europe and China are assembled in Shenzhen or Dongguan. As for India, 100% of the OnePlus smartphones sold here are assembled locally at facilities in Greater Noida. You can follow our explainer on which country the OnePlus company is from to get a clear picture.

Vivo and iQOO

Vivo is a Chinese brand from Guangdong and it grew under BBK Electronics, the same parent company that gave us Oppo, OnePlus, iQOO and Realme. Vivo is currently the number one smartphone brand in India.

Coming to manufacturing, over 99% of the Vivo phones sold in India are assembled locally at its Greater Noida facility. Globally, its phones are made in China, India, Indonesia and Bangladesh. You can learn about its BBK roots and manufacturing hubs in our detailed guide on which country Vivo belongs to.

Oppo

Oppo is a Chinese phone maker, which was founded in 2004 in Dongguan. That said, its registered headquarter is still in Shenzhen. And just like Vivo, Oppo grew under the BBK Electronics family and after BBK was dissolved in 2023, OnePlus and Realme came under Oppo's wing.

As for India, Oppo phones are assembled at a massive factory in Noida. During peak season, the Noida facility produces more than 6 million phones a month. If you are curious about Oppo's journey, go through our guide on which country the Oppo brand is from.

Realme

Realme is a Chinese company headquartered in Shenzhen and it was founded in 2018 by Sky Li, who was a former Oppo vice president. The Android phone maker started its journey as an Oppo sub-brand within the BBK family. However, after BBK Electronics was deregistered in 2023, Realme is now being reintegrated under Oppo.

Interestingly, Realme launched its first phone in India before anywhere else and every Realme phone sold in India is made in India. You can read the complete origin story in our article on which country Realme is from.

Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco

Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco all belong to Xiaomi Corporation, a Chinese company headquartered in Beijing and founded by Lei Jun in 2010. Xiaomi entered India in 2014 and since then, it has built one of the largest local supply chains in the country.

And that's why nearly every Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco phone sold in India comes with the "Made in India" sticker. The parent company is Chinese though and several internal components are still imported from various regions. We have covered the full story in our explainer on which country Xiaomi and Redmi are from.

Motorola

Motorola has the most complicated answer on this list. The brand started as an American company in 1928, but had a split in 2011 and its phone business (called Motorola Mobility) was separated. The phone business is now owned by China's Lenovo since 2014. The headquarters are still in Chicago and Motorola phones are still designed in the US, but the ownership is Chinese.

Most Motorola phones are made in China, while phones for local markets are built in India and Brazil. We have explained the entire ownership saga in our guide on which country Motorola belongs to.

Where Do the Components Inside Your Android Phone Come From?

Remember that the parts inside your Android phone are sourced globally. Even an Android phone assembled entirely in India packs a chipset from Taiwan, glass from South Korea and sensors from Japan. Modern smartphones are basically global products. So, here is a table to quickly find the country of various components used in Android phones.

ComponentWhere It Comes From
Chipset design (Snapdragon, Dimensity, Exynos, Tensor)US (Qualcomm, Google), Taiwan (MediaTek), South Korea (Samsung) and China (Unisoc, Xiaomi)
Chipset fabricationTaiwan (TSMC) or South Korea (Samsung Foundry)
Display panelSouth Korea (Samsung Display, LG) or China (BOE, TCL CSOT)
Camera sensorJapan (Sony), South Korea (Samsung ISOCELL) and China (OmniVision, GalaxyCore)
RAM and storageSouth Korea (Samsung, SK Hynix) or Micron (US company but fabs in Asia)

How to Check Which Country Your Android Phone was Made In?

Now that you know where each brand comes from, here is how you can verify the manufacturing country of your own phone.

Check the retail box: This is the most reliable method to verify where your Android phone was made. Every phone box has a specification slip that mentions the "Country of Origin" or "Made in" label. Check the slip and you will know where your Android phone was manufactured.

Check the regulatory label in Settings: On most Android phones, you can go to Settings > About Phone > Regulatory Labels to find compliance information and on some brands like Motorola, you can find the manufacturing country as well.

Don't rely on the IMEI number: You may have read on the internet that the 7th and 8th digits of the IMEI number reveal the manufacturing country. That's not true. The IMEI identifies the device model and its approval body, not the assembly location. The IMEI is still useful for verifying authenticity, though. Follow our guide to check the IMEI number on any Android phone for more details.

Most Android Phones Sold in India are Made in India

To sum up, no matter which Android phone you pick in India, your phone was almost certainly assembled within India. Back in 2014, only around 26% of the smartphones sold in India were made locally. Currently, that figure stands around 99%, thanks to the Make in India initiative and the PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme.

In India, many Android phone brands are using Indian contract manufacturers. Dixon Technologies now leads smartphone manufacturing in India and builds phones for Motorola, Realme and Xiaomi. On the other hand, Bhagwati Products assembles Android phones for Vivo, Oppo and Realme. Samsung runs its own in-house production at Noida and Foxconn handles large volumes too.

Not only that, India has become an export hub. Made-in-India smartphone production grew by 8% in 2025 and exports increased by 28%. So when you see "Made in India" label on an Android phone's box, it's not a marketing gimmick, but a reality.

And that wraps up our complete guide on which countries Android phones are made in. The simple answer is that most Android phone brands are Chinese or South Korean on paper, but if you bought your phone in India, it was most likely assembled here. Finally, if you have an iPhone and want to learn where your iPhone was made, follow our dedicated guide. And if you want to test your phone's hardware while you are at it, our Android secret codes guide has you covered.
