Gemini on Android has come a long way from being an extremely barebones assistant replacement to software that powers most of the AI experiences on Android, primarily on Google Pixels. While Gemini is omnipresent, most users could be unfamiliar with it, its features and how it works. Therefore, here's a comprehensive guide about Gemini Intelligence on Android, all its features and how to use them.
What Is Gemini Intelligence on Android?
Gemini Intelligence refers to a suite of Google Gemini features on Android. Gemini is Google's flagship multimodal AI on Android, which is its default digital assistant. Unlike the classic Google Assistant, which relied on rigid voice commands, Gemini can understand natural language, process images and read the context of what's currently visible on your screen. Besides, it also features the ability to create photos, videos, music, help in research, and pull up relevant data from your connected apps.

On a technical level, Gemini Intelligence on Android is of two kinds – one that relies on Google's servers for complex reasoning and another that uses Gemini Nano. The latter is a smaller, efficient model that runs entirely on-device. The local processing is powered by Google's own Tensor chipsets, and it runs privacy-sensitive tasks and gives quick contextual suggestions without sending your data to the cloud, unlike most Google Gemini features.
A Brief History of Gemini Intelligence on Android
Gemini's journey on Android has been incredibly rapid. The app initially launched with the Pixel 9 phones to run alongside the Google Assistant. With rapid updates over the years, it slowly transitioned into being Google's main assistant, replacing the Google Assistant entirely. It is what also brought features like Pixel Screenshots and Pixel Studio.
Before that, Google Gemini was known as Bard. It was initially announced in December 2022, and with rapid upgrades, it was finally announced in the Google I/O 2023 keynote. In September 2023, Google introduced extensions in Bard, where users could let the assistant access its apps and services, including Google Workspace, YouTube, Google Maps, Flights and more.
Google rebranded Bard to Gemini in February 2024, overhauling the app completely and introducing advanced models that were faster and more intelligent. Gemini took the stage at Google I/O 2024, where Google also announced Gemini's integration into other Google products like Chrome, Photos and Workspace.
Fast forward to 2026 with the Pixel 10 series, and Google is slowly transitioning into Agentic AI. Gemini will soon not just answer questions but handle device tasks natively, which is what Google has been focusing on since it introduced the AI assistant. With the addition of agentic AI and the ever-expanding Gemini feature suite, Google has introduced Gemini Intelligence.
Furthermore, Google announced at The Android Show 2026 that it is establishing a massive security framework to ensure Gemini remains less intrusive and acts more like a helpful partner to get things done quickly.
How to Enable Gemini Intelligence on Your Android Phone
Gemini Intelligence is a term Google is reserving for Google Pixel smartphones for now. But on most modern phones, Gemini and its features come pre-installed and out of the box. In the case of Pixels, Gemini is already the default assistant on all the currently supported Pixel smartphones. If you're using an older Android phone running Android 10 or higher with at least 2 GB of RAM, you can enable it easily:
- Download the Google Gemini app from the Google Play Store.
- Open the app and follow the on-screen prompts to opt in.

- Once accepted, Gemini will replace your current default assistant. You can now trigger it using the "Hey Google" keyword or by long-pressing your phone's power button.
All Gemini Intelligence Features on Android Explained
Gemini Intelligence consists of all the features Google has populated in Gemini over the years. While the assistant works across the Android ecosystem, some of its features are limited to Pixel smartphones and the Tensor chips inside them. Here's a comprehensive list of all the Gemini Intelligence features on Android.
Gemini Live and Natural Conversation

Gemini Live is available on all Android phones. It helps users have a natural conversation with Google's AI with the ability to interrupt the AI, change the subject midway, or ask it to brainstorm ideas with you. It also lets you share your screen or open your camera to let you ask questions and get real-time audio feedback and on-screen cues about what you are looking at in the real world.
Circle to Search
While technically a broader Google search feature, Circle to Search is one of the most nifty features on Android. Instead of invoking the assistant and asking questions, which takes forever, users can long-press on the nav bar to bring up Circle to Search. They can then mark the thing they want to search for on the screen for Google to then pull up relevant search results.

Users can also use Circle to Search to search for images on the web, analyse and copy text, translate text, recognise music, and do more contextual things. The tool was first introduced on the Pixel smartphone but is now available on almost all modern Android smartphones.
Magic Cue and Screen Context
If you are reading an article or looking at an image on any Android phone, you can pull up Gemini to tap and Ask about Screen to get summaries and translations. However, the Pixel 10 introduces Magic Cue. It's a Pixel-exclusive feature that runs proactively in the background.

Magic Cue understands the context of your texts, chats and calls and automatically surfaces the exact information or suggestion you need before you even have to ask for it. The feature uses Gemini Intelligence's Gemini Nano on-device model to safeguard information.
Gemini Personal Intelligence and Autofill
Gemini's Personal Intelligence is currently in very early stages, and it's a direct successor to the extensions feature. Once enabled, Gemini automatically gains access to your data across a wide suite of apps, making it easier to pull relevant data and offering deeper integration.

For example, it can find the photo you're looking for from Google Photos, without you having to manually open the Photos app and search for it. Similarly, Autofill on Gboard is also getting a Gemini upgrade. Gemini is now connected to Google's Autofill to allow the AI to intelligently fill out complex forms on your behalf, like passport details, addresses and more.
Agentic AI and Scheduled Actions
Moving beyond simple prompts, Gemini can now handle complex automations through a new Scheduled Actions Interface. You can easily set up routines, like asking Gemini to compile a personalised list of news every morning.

Besides, Gemini can soon handle multi-step tasks across apps. Once rolled out, Gemini can automate an app's interface, after which a user can select "View progress" to watch its actions in real time.
There's also a live persistent notification chip that uses Android's Live Updates feature to help you keep track of the progress of the AI working in the background. The same is hard-coded to require user confirmation before making any purchases on your behalf.
Rambler
Voice-assisted AI typing could be clunky, especially when you have a lot to say and often find yourself stuttering, adding the "uhhs" and "umms". While the Pixel voice typing is already intelligent enough to filter them out, voice-typed texts tend to still need manual editing before sending them, and that's where the Rambler feature comes to the rescue.

It is one of the Gemini Intelligence features on Android that excels at converting your voice to text more accurately. When you enable it to transcribe your speech, it automatically takes the important parts of your speech and arranges them together to form a concise message. The feature can also seamlessly switch between languages in a single message.
Camera Coach

Powered by Gemini Nano, Camera Coach is a Pixel-exclusive feature that acts as a real-time photography mentor. Once you line up the shot, the AI analyses the scene and offers instant, on-device advice like suggesting that you adjust your angle for better lighting or step closer to your subject for a sharper portrait.
Real-Time Call Translation and Call Notes
This is yet another Pixel-exclusive Gemini Intelligence feature. While Live Translation has existed before, Gemini on Pixel improves it by not making it sound very robotic. Gemini analyses your voice and translates your speech during a phone call while actively mirroring your natural way of speaking, speed and tone.

Speaking of which, Call Notes helps summarise your phone conversations, whereas the Take a Message feature helps you hear what a caller wants to say before answering the calls. The same goes for Call Screening and Hold for me, where Gemini answers calls on your behalf and displays the transcription before you take the call. Lastly, the built-in Scam Detection uses Gemini Nano to alert users if they're speaking to a potential scammer.
Pixel Studio and Searchable Screenshots

Pixel phones come with a dedicated Pixel Studio app, allowing you to generate AI images entirely using text prompts. Additionally, the Pixel Screenshots app uses Gemini Nano to analyse every screenshot you take to make the text, images and the context in them searchable.
Writing Tools

Gemini Intelligence also packs Writing Tools into Gboard on Google Pixel smartphones. It uses the built-in Gemini Nano model to help you proofread or rephrase your text or change its tone to make it sound more professional, friendly or elaborate.
Gemini Photo Editing Features
Gemini Intelligence packs a host of photo editing features. These include AI Enhance, Magic Eraser, AI Unblur, Touch up, Move, Add me, Best Take, Portrait Blur and Zoom Enhance. Besides, there's also an Ask Gemini feature in Google Photos that helps you edit photos with prompts. For example, you can ask Gemini to change the colour of the sky or add elements to the images.
Is Google Gemini Intelligence Free?
Yes, the standard version of Google Gemini is completely free to use across all Android smartphones. This includes basic text, voice and image generation, as well as contextual tools and call features. However, if you want access to Google's most capable AI models, you will need to upgrade to Gemini's Pro models, which come with Google One AI premium plans, alongside a host of other perks.
As Gemini Intelligence continues to grow on Android, more features will be added to the same, bringing more utility to our smartphones. The push toward Agentic AI should help users hand their tasks to AI so that they can sit back and relax.
