Apple has quietly increased iPhone prices on its Japan storefront, and the timing has raised fresh questions about whether other markets like India could see similar hikes down the line.

Apple iPhone Price Hike in Japan

The increases, first spotted by the Spanish tech publication iPhoneros, affect the iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPhone 17, iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. These price hikes range from 8% to 12%, depending on the model.

Here's a quick look at how prices have changed across the affected Apple iPhones:

iPhone ModelOld Price (Japanese yen)New Price (Japanese yen)Increase
iPhone 17 Pro Max194,800 Japanese yen214,800 Japanese yen10%
iPhone 17 Pro179,800 Japanese yen194,800 Japanese yen8%

iPhone 16 Plus129,800 Japanese yen144,800 Japanese yen12%

Do note that the prices listed in the above table are for the base storage variant of each model.

Apple hasn't publicly explained the iPhone price hike in Japan (yet), but the timing lines up with the Japanese yen trading at its weakest level in around 40 years. A weaker yen reduces the dollar value of Apple's sales in the country, which likely pushed the Cupertino giant to bring local pricing closer in line with other markets.

Notably, Apple did not increase iPhone prices in the US, Europe, India or other regions. This suggests that the Japan hike is currency-driven rather than tied to the ongoing RAM crisis, at least for now.

Last month, Apple increased its Mac and iPad prices due to the current memory supply shortage driving up component costs. The iPhone was notably spared from that round of increases.

However, since Apple CEO Tim Cook has already gone on record acknowledging that iPhone price hikes are unavoidable, there's a high chance that might happen anytime soon.

Not to mention that it's widely believed that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could launch with a price hike of around $200 (approximately Rs 19,000). The iPhone 18 Pro series launch date is reportedly set for September 9, 2026.

Although the Japan price increase is currency-led and not component-led, it does show that the tech giant is willing to adjust iPhone pricing when the underlying economics shift a bit.

The global chip shortage has already pushed several smartphone makers to raise prices in India this year, all of which we've been tracking in our smartphone price hike tracker. It's clear that if component costs keep climbing and Apple decides to extend its Mac and iPad pricing logic to the iPhone too, India wouldn't be immune to that risk

For now, all eyes are on Apple's fiscal Q3 earnings call on July 30, 2026, where the company is expected to offer more clarity on its pricing strategy going forward.
