Summary

  • Nothing's Head of Design Adam Bates has shared why the company is switching to Glyph Matrix on the Phone (3).
  • Glyph Matrix is said to allow custom animations, reactive light sync, and more personalisation.
  • Another reason for the switch is to free up space inside the Phone (3) for other components.

Nothing is moving away from Glyph LEDs to Glyph Matrix in the Nothing Phone (3). This move puzzled many users, but it looks like we finally have an official answer of the reason behind the move.

In an interview with Design Milk, Nothing's head of design Adam Bates revealed why the firm is switching to Glyph Matrix. He said the Glyph Matrix would allow custom animations, reactive light sync on interactions, and the ability to personalise the device.

He says the reason behind the move is to make a good canvas for real-time updates and make glanceable communication feel more personal.

With Phone (3), the Glyph Matrix carries that vision forward but in a more expressive and intentional way. Instead of predefined light strips, we now have a dense field of programmable micro-LEDs, a canvas for real-time, glanceable communication that feels alive, playful, and deeply personal.

It allows for more dynamic animations and visuals that Nothing couldn't achieve with Glyph lights. Thanks to this, the Glyph Matrix can both alert and communicate with users via patterns, symbols, and abstract visuals. Despite the changes, users will still be able to assign effects to different apps and notifications.

Adam also adds that the shift to Glyph Matrix has resulted in freed up space inside the phone. For those worried about the end of Glyph Lights, he says that it's still the Glyph Interface but with a new format.

This is still the Glyph Interface, just in a new format. We needed to evolve its capabilities while staying true to what makes it distinctly Nothing. Our goal wasn’t to create another display that adds noise, but a canvas for subtle expression – one that can evolve with how people use it.

The Nothing Phone (3) is launching on July 1 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 and could boast a 5,150mAh battery with 100W fast charging. Camera-wise, the phone could boast three 50 MP snappers.

The India price is currently unknown, although, it's expected to cost under Rs 50,000. Besides, Nothing is committing to seven years of updates on the Phone (3). The firm will also launch Nothing Headphone (1) which was recently spotted on NCC.
