Samsung is reportedly building a second wide-screen foldable for a 2027 launch, according to a new report from Korean outlet ET News. If the claim turns out to be true, it would take the company's 2027 foldable range to five phones. Samsung is pushing on the wide foldable as it saw record Galaxy Z Fold 8 pre-orders this year.
A Second Wide Fold May Join the Galaxy Z9 Series
ET News reports that Samsung has started work on two wide foldable projects under the 2027 Galaxy Z9 family and has briefed its component partners about the plan. One is simply the next wide Fold while the other is an additional wide device, which could be distinct from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 successor.
The report says that the hardware is not final and the screen size and full spec sheet are still undecided. It further adds that that Samsung could change this year's boxy 4:3 aspect ratio for a wider ratio, designed for video playback.

Now, adding the extra phone along with this year's Flip, Fold and Fold Ultra, then add the next-gen TriFold, and Samsung's 2027 Z family expands to five separate foldables.
That said, the exact devices are not confirmed. Earlier codename leaks pointed to five 2027 devices, including Flip 9, Fold 9, Fold 9 Ultra, TriFold 2 and a mystery 5th model (tipped as Samsung's first rollable phone). The ET News report says that 5th phone could be the second wide Fold instead.

Why Samsung Is Doubling Down on Wide
Following a strong response to the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung has likely taken this decision. This year, Samsung refreshed its standard Fold with a shorter and wider 4:3 shape and moved the traditional tall design to the Ultra. Now, this bet has paid off for Samsung. According to the report, the Fold 8 accounted for around 70% of the Galaxy Z8 series' domestic pre-orders. In fact, it reached around 1.44 million pre-orders in South Korea. That is a record high for Samsung and about 39% higher than the previous generation's 1.09 million.
Meanwhile, Apple is also expected to launch its wide iPhone Fold Ultra in September. It's said to have a similar body and form-factor, as we discussed in our comparison between Galaxy Z Fold 8 and iPhone Fold Ultra.
