Apple is reportedly preparing a major shift in its AI strategy with iOS 27, one that could fundamentally change how users interact with AI on iPhones. According to a new report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Cupertino giant may allow users to choose between multiple third-party AI models for system-wide features.
Apple May Let Users Choose Third-Party AI Models Across iOS 27
As per the latest report, Apple is working on enabling support for rival AI models across various iOS 27 features such as Writing Tools, Image Playground and more. This would effectively turn iOS into a more flexible ecosystem for AI, letting users pick the model that best suits their needs, rather than relying solely on Apple Intelligence.
This feature, internally referred to as "Extensions", is said to "access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features such as Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground and more."
This aligns with earlier reports suggesting Apple may open Siri to Gemini and Claude, potentially ending ChatGPT's early exclusivity on the platform. The move could also complement Apple's broader push to bring an upgraded Siri app in iOS 27.

A previous report highlighted that Siri in iOS 27 may get Visual Intelligence capabilities, allowing it to understand on-screen content and perform contextual actions more effectively. Combined with support for multiple AI models, Siri could become far more versatile and competitive with other advanced assistants.
Beyond Siri, iOS 27 is shaping up to be a deeply AI-driven update across the board. Reports indicate that Apple is working on a range of new Apple Intelligence features, including a generative AI-powered photo editing on iPhones, which could significantly transform how users edit images.
It appears Apple is trying to compensate for being this late to the AI party by making the experience more personal and customisable. By allowing users to choose their preferred AI models, Apple could differentiate itself in a crowded market while giving power users the flexibility they've been asking for.
With WWDC 2026 just around the corner, all eyes will be on Apple to see how much of the rumoured AI power becomes official. If these reports hold true, iOS 27 could mark the beginning of a more open and far more dynamic AI era for the iPhone.
