Summary

  • Samsung's tri-fold design has appeared in the latest One UI 8 build with a dual inward folding hinge.
  • It might launch with a single outer display and could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
  • The upcoming foldable could be officially called the Samsung Galaxy G Fold.

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 launch mere days away, everyone is waiting to see what Samsung has done this time around. However, a new tri-fold leak has slightly shifted the spotlight. From what it looks like, this might be the first unofficial look at Samsung's first-ever triple-folding smartphone.

The leaked image was shared by Android Authority with a dual folding design and the signature Samsung design language that the brand uses with its 'Galaxy Z Fold' series smartphones. It seems like the triple-folding smartphone will be called the "Samsung Galaxy G Fold".

The tri-fold will comprise a three-part design with three rear panels. The leftmost section will be the back panel of the smartphone with a vertical triple rear camera module.

Moreover, as it is evident from the above image, the middle part will contain the outer display with a centre punch-hole selfie camera. Interestingly, the rightmost panel appears to be completely empty.

At first, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy G Fold will contain one less display, which is weird given that it is a triple-folding smartphone.

However, it seems like this is going to be the case because of the inward folding hinge mechanism that Samsung will use for the device. As it is evident from the above image, the inner screen will have two creases on the inner foldable display, meaning that it will fold twice inward.

This is a different take than what we saw with the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, which launched last year as the world's first triple-folding smartphone.

So, if we were to speculate, the right side of the smartphone will fold inward, then the left side will come at the top, bringing the smartphone to a regular slab-phone form factor.

The Galaxy G Fold design came to light as part of One UI 8 animation files. Within those files, there was also a warning video that further proved that the device will be an inward folding three-piece foldable. If not folded in the right way, the camera module can break and also cause permanent damage to the display.

Apart from this, the side panel on the Galaxy G Fold appears to be recessed in order to accommodate the power and volume buttons. And speaking of the side panel, a previous leak outed that the Samsung tri-fold will use a combination of titanium and aluminium for durability.

This could either mean that the mid-frame will be made out of titanium and the hinges will be made out of aluminium. However, we won't know for sure until something concrete surfaces. Other than that, it is also expected to draw its power from the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. It will most likely get paired with 16 GB RAM and up to 1 TB storage.

With that being said, it is too early to comment on anything. So, let's wait for Samsung's official Galaxy Unpacked event that is scheduled for July 9, 2025, and will see the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and the Galaxy Z Flip 7. We might get an early glimpse into Samsung's tri-fold vision at the event.
